I ran a corporate training session today and took some time to analyze template sites and API sites — specifically what kind of money they're actually making and how they make it.

• API sites make money in two ways, but the underlying logic is the same: margin arbitrage. They're middlemen who win by volume. They take upstream APIs, package them into more user-friendly services, and profit through scale.
• Template sites exist to make launching a site faster and easier. They come with pre-integrated features built right in, lowering the barrier to entry for building a site. They make money by selling templates and offering premium add-on services.

The interesting thing is that these three models can be combined with each other. Start with a template site to get up and running quickly, plug in APIs to power your core functionality, and then package everything you've learned into a knowledge monetization product.
