How Should Programmers Do Business? Shifting from an Employee Mindset to a Marketing Mindset
How should programmers do business?
Shifting from an employee grind mentality to a marketing mindset is essential.
Split your revenue ten ways and tie it to people — that's far more sustainable than keeping everything for yourself.
Your business model is the single most important factor in determining whether your venture lasts.
Beyond that, it really just comes down to getting out there and doing it. Don't front-load everything with imagined obstacles. When problems come up, solve them — and stop draining your energy on overthinking.
I've genuinely learned a lot about the business mindset from Ban. The most common mistake programmers make is putting their heads down and writing code, assuming that if the product is good enough, users will just show up. But the reality is that marketing and distribution are what make or break you. Learn to share the upside — get more people out there promoting for you. That will take you so much further than trying to carry everything on your own.
