Microsoft Learn AI Certifications: The Big Tech Company That Gives Out Certs Most Generously — One Skill, One Badge

When it comes to AI certifications, Microsoft is the most generous of the major tech companies — you can earn a certificate for each individual skill without having to grind through one massive "all-in-one" exam.

The Microsoft Learn AI framework is organized into four tiers, but honestly, most people only need the first two. Here's a breakdown by tier.

Main portal: learn.microsoft.com/ai

⚠️ Important heads-up: The older AI-900 exam retired on June 30th and has been replaced by AI-901. Don't register for the wrong version — confirm you're signing up for AI-901 before you pay.

Tier 1 · Foundational (Free + Certified)

Zero prerequisites. Everything is free. Complete the content, earn the certificate.

Introduction to AI in Azure (AI-901 Self-Paced Course)

🔗 learn.microsoft.com AI-901 Course

The official self-paced course for AI-901, covering core Azure AI concepts. This is the updated replacement for the retired AI-900 and is the recommended starting point for beginners.

Fundamentals of Generative AI (Single Module · One Hour)

🔗 learn.microsoft.com Generative AI Fundamentals Module

Just one module, completable in about an hour. A fast way to get up to speed on the fundamentals of generative AI — ideal if you're short on time.

Tier 2 · Role-Based Paths (Choose by Job Function)

Pick the path that matches your role. This is the tier where most people should actually invest their time.

🔗 learn.microsoft.com/credentials/browse

  • Business rolesAI Business Professional: No coding required — great for marketing, operations, and management
  • Engineering rolesAzure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102): The core certification for developers
  • Data rolesMicrosoft Foundry path: Tailored for data science and data engineering

💡 How to choose: Start with your role, then pick the cert. Don't force yourself through AI-102 if you're in a business role, and don't stop at Business Professional if you're an engineer.

Tier 3 · Hands-On Tooling

For those who want to get their hands dirty — this tier is your next step.

MCP for Beginners

🔗 aka.ms/mcp-for-beginners

Microsoft's official introductory tutorial for MCP (Model Context Protocol), with working examples in C#, Python, TypeScript, and Rust. Worth a look if you're interested in integrating with Claude or the broader AI Agent ecosystem.

Self-Service Lab Environment

🔗 learn.microsoft.com/labs

Microsoft's self-service sandbox environment — practice hands-on without any local setup required.

Tier 4 · Applied Skills Micro-Certifications

This is where Microsoft's "cert-friendly" reputation really shines.

Applied Skills is Microsoft's micro-certification program — one skill, one certificate:

  • Faster to earn than traditional certifications
  • Higher pass rates
  • Concrete, visible credentials you can put directly on your résumé

If you want to quickly build up a stack of verifiable AI credentials, Applied Skills offers the best return on your time.

My Learning Recommendations

  1. Confirm AI-901 before registering: AI-900 retired on June 30th — don't buy outdated study materials or sign up for the wrong exam
  2. Focus on the first two tiers: Tier 1 builds your foundation and gets you an entry-level cert; Tier 2 lets you go deep in your specific role — that's enough for most people
  3. Let your role guide your path: Business professionals shouldn't force themselves through AI-102, and engineers shouldn't stop at Business Professional
  4. Use Applied Skills to boost your résumé: High pass rates, quick turnaround — great for making your skills visible in the short term
  5. The MCP tutorial is worth its own dedicated time: Getting MCP running in four languages is a hard, practical skill for working within the AI Agent ecosystem

FAQ

Can I still register for AI-900?

No — AI-900 retired on June 30th and has been replaced by AI-901. Make sure you're registering for AI-901 so you don't pay for the wrong exam.

What's the difference between Microsoft Applied Skills and traditional certifications?

Applied Skills is "one skill, one cert": free, fast to complete, and the easiest way to earn credentials. Traditional role-based certifications (like AI-102) cover much broader ground but come with exam fees and longer study timelines.

Are Microsoft AI courses free?

All self-paced courses on Microsoft Learn are free, and Applied Skills assessments are also free to take and earn. Only the traditional certification exams require a paid registration fee.

The Bottom Line

The beauty of Microsoft's AI certification system is that it's modular and cert-friendly — four tiers, with the first two covering 90% of learners, and Applied Skills micro-certs that let you earn one credential per skill and build your résumé fast. It's the most "learn-as-you-go" friendly program among the major tech companies.
