Individual or company? Opening a payment account

You can start selling abroad without a company. Below: what each payment platform asks of an individual and of a company, every step of opening an account, and when a company is worth it, each with a link to the platform's own page.

In short

  • No registered company: open as an individual. Creem, Dodo Payments and Waffo Pancake take individuals in mainland China, and Paddle accepts individuals and sole traders anywhere outside its sanctions list.source
  • Dodo's line between the two: an individual is a creator or sole proprietor paid personally, with no company registration or business tax ID; a registered entity has a tax ID and is paid to the company's bank account.source
  • Creem pays a mainland individual to Alipay: up to CNY 50,000 a payout and CNY 300,000–600,000 a year. Past that, a company's bank account.source
  • Stripe opens for neither individuals nor companies in mainland China: a Hong Kong individual account needs a Hong Kong ID number and a US one an SSN or ITIN, so a mainland founder opens with a Hong Kong or US company. Polar pays out only through Stripe, so the same holds.source
  • A company on Waffo Pancake is still paid as a person for now: company payout accounts are 'being finalized', so payouts go to the verified individual.source
  • Switching later from individual to company means a business verification and a new bank check (Dodo), so pick the one you will keep.source
  • How the income is taxed at home is a question for an accountant: this guide covers what the platforms ask for, not tax.

Only a mainland Chinese ID

PayPal.cn (as a personal seller) or Waffo (waffo.ai); with a passport and a Hong Kong bank card, a Stripe personal account too

Checked: PayPal.cn's personal seller account opens with real-name verification (China residents, 18 and over); payments from abroad cost 4.40% + US$0.30; withdraw in CNY to a Chinese bank card (0.5% cap through 2026, 1.0% standard, plus 6% VAT on the fee) or by USD wire (US$35 each). Personal accounts opened on paypal.com after 30 June 2026 cannot take payments for goods. source

Checked: Stripe Hong Kong needs an HKID number for an individual; without one, a Hong Kong Business Registration Number as a sole proprietorship, plus a Hong Kong address and a Hong Kong bank account in your name. A passport and a Hong Kong bank card are not enough. source

A company (abroad or in China) or a sole proprietorship

Stripe (one merchant per website) or PayPal.cn, or Subotiz

Checked: Stripe: websites or businesses run independently need separate Stripe accounts, and a suspended user may not open a new one without Stripe's approval. source

Checked: Subotiz describes itself as a Merchant of Record for SaaS (5% + 50¢); it connects PayPal, Checkout.com, Airwallex and others, with no Stripe in that list; one account holds up to 100 stores. source

If you register a company

Official fees and requirements, read on 2026-10-17; not legal or tax advice.

A Hong Kong private company

  • Incorporating online costs HK$1,545; the business registration fee and levy are paid with it (HK$2,350 for one year from 1 April 2026), so about HK$3,895 in all.source
  • Non-residents may incorporate; the registered office must be in Hong Kong.source
  • At least one director who is a natural person (need not live in Hong Kong) and a company secretary who lives in Hong Kong or is a Hong Kong company; a sole director cannot also be the secretary.source
  • No minimum paid-up capital; electronic certificates are normally issued within an hour.source

A US company through Stripe Atlas

  • US$500 once, including Delaware fees and the first year of the registered agent; the agent is US$100 a year after that.source
  • A Delaware C corporation or LLC; Atlas gets the EIN, which takes 10–35 business days for a founder without an SSN.source
  • US card payments and payouts (up to US$100,000) can start before the EIN arrives; a franchise tax report is due every year by 1 March.source
  • Atlas does not guarantee approval for Stripe payments.source

A UK private limited company

  • Registering online with Companies House costs £100 and usually takes 24 hours (by post: £124, 8–10 days).source
  • At least one director aged 16 or over, who need not live in the UK; a UK registered office address is required, and a PO box is not accepted.source
  • Directors verify their identity through GOV.UK One Login; the people with significant control (over 25% of shares or votes, for example) are named at registration. No company secretary is needed.source

FAQ

Can I get paid from abroad without a company?

Yes. Creem, Dodo Payments and Waffo Pancake take individuals in mainland China; Stripe and Polar do not and need a company in Hong Kong, the US or elsewhere.

Can an individual in mainland China open Stripe?

Not by Stripe's own pages: it opens no accounts for individuals or companies in mainland China, so a Hong Kong or US company is needed.

What does an individual need to open an account?

An identity document (Dodo wants a physical government photo ID and a selfie), a payout account in your own name (Creem pays mainland individuals to Alipay, Dodo to a bank account in your name), and a live website with prices and terms.

When is a company worth it?

When income passes an individual's payout limits (Creem's Alipay payouts to mainland individuals stop at CNY 300,000–600,000 a year), when you want Stripe, or when partners share the income. Ask an accountant about tax at home.

This covers what the platforms ask for; it is not legal or tax advice. The data comes from the open-source payment-guard, the same as the picker's.
